Comment: Your friends and family will admire this terrific set of 8 vintage French sheepbone dining chairs, including two arm chairs and six armless chairs. The chairs are designed for the dining room with the arm chairs intended for the two heads of the table, but they would also serve you handsomely as side chairs or occasional seating. The very nice set of 8 sheepbone dining chairs dates to around 1930 and the chairs were crafted in France. The chairs are constructed in solid oak wood with Sheepbone or os de mouton curvy legs and stretchers. The frames are very sturdy and you can also take the opportunity to reupholster the nice quality vintage Sheepbone dining chair frames to suit your decor and create a custom look. This Sheepbone or os de mouton style of chair will look terrific in a Traditional or Midcentury style dining room. You could also separate the set of 8 Sheepbone chairs to use the arm chairs in a living room or flanking a console in your large foyer, and employ the armless chairs as occasional seating in a living room, hallway, or in your bedrooms and guest bedrooms.

Style: Sheepbone <div>LOUIS XIV AND THE BOULLE STYLE</div><div>The Sun King, Louis XIV (1643 1715), ascended the throne shortly before he turned five years of age, although he did not personally rule until the age of 23. Louis XIV enjoyed the longest reign of any European monarch, dying just before his 77th birthday. Louis XIV was an absolute monarchist and history attributes him with the phrase L'tat, c'est moi (I am the State). With an all-powerful monarch around whom the court and all of France rotated, the grandiose Baroque style of furniture and decorative arts, which originated in Italy, was brought to France. To please the King, furniture makers produced massive, elaborate, dramatic and more and more extravagant pieces, just for the sake of extravagance.</div><div>The epitome of this style under Louis XIV was reached by Andr-Charles Boulle (1642 1732), the French furniture maker who is recognized as the preeminant artist in the field of marquetry (the art of using veneer to create patterns). Boulle style became known as the use of very expensive tortoishell veneer, which was then further decorated with inlaid pieces of hand-painted brass. The result is extraordinary and spectacular and all of the courtiers of Louis XIV rushed to acquire their own Boulle-style pieces for their chateaux. Additionally, curvy chair legs, known as mutton-bone turnery or Sheepbone style, were also popular at this time. </div>
