Things We Love Right Now: South Carolina Elvis Festival
Elvis Presley is coming to Newberry, South Carolina! Or rather, many Elvis tribute artists will descend upon our town for the South Carolina Elvis Festival. By coincidence, Greg and I visited Tupelo, MS, a few weeks ago for a furniture show. We stopped in to see Elvis Presley's birthplace and really enjoyed our visit. We're delighted at the chance of another Elvis fix at the South Carolina Elvis Festival at the Newberry Opera House from September 12-15, 2013. The entertainment includes the Ultimate Elvis Contest. You can’t get more fun than dueling Elvi!
It was amazing to see where the superstar Elvis Presley came from. This is Elvis' house in Tupelo. His father borrowed $180 to buy materials to build the two room house himself. It just has a bedroom and a kitchen. Sadly, the house was foreclosed three years later as he couldn't make the payments. The family drifted around Tupelo until Elvis was 13. They left in the middle of the night to go to Nashville in the hope of a better life - a true American Dream story.
This Roots of Elvis photo shows Elvis with his parents and it hangs in the bedroom of the Tupelo home.
We enjoyed spending the afternoon touring the home, his boyhood church, and of course, browsing the gift shop! I have a kitschy souvenir collection so when I saw this awesome pair of Elvis pajamas that look like one of Elvis’ jumpsuits - complete with belt buckle - I couldn't resist!
On the way back to South Carolina, we stopped outside Birmingham, AL, at the Irondale Cafe, a.k.a. the original Whistlestop Café where the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed. The movie was based on Fannie Flagg's terrific book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Café. I had fried green tomatoes, fried catfish with hushpuppies, green beans, cabbage, and sweet tea. The fried green tomatoes were the best part! If you're going to the South Carolina Elvis Festival in Newberry, stop in and say hello to us at the gallery! You'll find us at 1409 Main Street, Newberry and you can see a taste of our vintage style at the EuroLuxHome.com furniture and home decor accents online gallery.

During our trip to Tupelo, we saw this sculpture of young Elvis outside the house where he was born. Who would have thought that this young man was destined to become a legend? Who would have thought he'd swap his overalls for fabulous spangled suits that you could probably spot from outer space? Denim overalls were all his parents could afford and apparently it put Elvis off denim for life. I imagine we'll see some wild outfits at the South Carolina Elvis Festival. I can almost see the rhinestones flashing in the distance as the performers head toward Newberry!

My boss was recently visiting Nashville for a conference and she saw those pyjamas in the window of a gift shop but the store was closed. i've been trying to find them online but I can't find them anywhere. Can you tell me what the name of the store is so i can see if i can somehow order them by phone or online? Her bday is next week and I wanted to surprise her.
Thank you!
Vicky
I bought the Elvis pajamas there at the museum at the Elvis Boyhood Home in Tupelo, MS. Here is the website and there is a phone number for the giftshop: http://www.elvispresleybirthplace.com/
Good luck!
